Japanese Persimmon Tannin Soap

This isn’t just a persimmon-scented soap—it’s made with kaki shibu, concentrated tannins from Japanese persimmon (Diospyros kaki).

Japanese persimmon soap has become especially popular for mature skin because of its association with 2-nonenal, a compound produced through the oxidation of skin lipids that can contribute to the distinctive, persistent body odor that becomes more noticeable as we age.

Rather than simply blending persimmon fruit into the soap, we use actual condensed persimmon tannins—the component that makes kaki persimmon so interesting for deodorizing skincare.

Why Hot Process?

We make this bar using the traditional hot-process method. The oils and lye are cooked through the primary soapmaking process before our prepared kaki tannin is incorporated.

This allows us to intentionally formulate around this specialty botanical rather than adding it directly to a fresh, highly reactive lye mixture.

The result is a wonderfully old-fashioned, rustic bar of true soap made with purpose.

Why Isn’t It Bright Orange?

Because real persimmon tannin isn’t bright orange!

Kaki tannin is naturally brown to amber, and its botanical compounds can deepen and change color in the alkaline environment of handmade soap. We use cosmetic mineral color to bring out a warm persimmon hue, but we don’t disguise the natural character of the ingredients simply to create a perfectly orange bar.

Expect beautiful variations in color and texture from batch to batch. That’s part of what makes each handmade bar unique.
